2017 Duppy Conqueror Rosé

  • Tasting Notes

Radiant rose gold hue. Nose opens with notes of pink strawberries, orange blossom, spring flowers, musky rose water, wet stone, and both fresh cut and Jolly Rancher iterations of watermelon. Aromatics carry through on the palate with bonus hints of ripe peach, candied orange peel, and tropical notes of lychee and guava, ending with vibrant lime zest. An initial pop of bright acidity gives way to a pleasingly round body and long, clean finish. Drink now through 2019.

In Afro-Carribbean cultures a duppy is a menacing ghost or spirit. Popularized by the Bob Marley song, a duppy conqueror essentially is a ghostbuster. In Jamaican folklore it connotes—and conjures—superhero powers. Our Uncle Buntin {a.k.a. Dad's brother Ansel} drew this wine’s “cover art” circa 1975. We were too small then to grasp its meanings. It is a rendering of his haunted dreams, a summoning, a call to action: Let us find our inner superheroes that we may face down our demons, and in so doing vanquish them.

Of Interest: Though our last vintage of Westside Zinfandel proper was 2016, this wine represents the final bottling from that vineyard which was ripped out shortly after the 2017 harvest. The vineyard was not farmed during its final year but David deemed the fruit it yielded untended to be suitable for a rosé trial. Herewith, the one-off result of that gambit.
