2014 Tempranillo

  • Tasting Notes

    Our second vintage of Tempranillo exhibits magnificent extraction and intense expression of fruit thanks in part {and ironically} to the past two years of drought. Gorgeous magenta core and ruby rim are glossy and showy yet serene, like the still calm of a lake at dawn. Nose bursts with ripe blue and black fruits followed by dried red fruits and flowers and a hint of fine Italian leather. Deeper in, fresh Alpine notes dance with subtle smoked herbs and faint burning wood. Mouthfeel is silky, long, and deep, filling the palate with succulent warm blueberry compote and chalky meringue. Medium body with ultra-fine tannins. Drink now through 2030.

  • Background

    In 2009 when we replanted our Big Field vineyard, David decided to install a one-acre section of Tempranillo alongside three acres of Petite Sirah. These were the first new varietals introduced on our property since 1990. David had already made one vintage (2008) of Petite Sirah from grapes purchased from a neighboring vineyard... but Tempranillo was a new venture altogether. When the first vintage (2013) debuted, the fans went wild. Allocated exclusively to our wine club members, it never saw the light of day online—at a mere 200 cases there wasn't enough to go around. As of November 2016 we have about 100 cases remaining following club allocations.
