2016 Tempranillo

  • Tasting Notes

Medium ruby color. Nose begins with rich boysenberry and wild blackberry notes, opening to a bouquet of Earl Grey tealeaves, sandalwood, saffron, dried rose petals, and dried herbs. Olfactory notes carry through on palate, enriched with notes of marinated fig, bramble fruit compote with vanilla cream, and sassafras, finishing with a subtle hint of sweet tobacco. Medium-bodied with medium tannins. Drink now through 2028.

In 2009 when we replanted our Big Field vineyard, David decided to install a one-acre section of Tempranillo alongside three acres of Petite Sirah. These were the first new varietals introduced on our property since 1990. David had already made one vintage (2008) of Petite Sirah from grapes purchased from a neighboring vineyard... but Tempranillo was a new venture altogether. With the first vintage (2013) it found its devotees, and it now has a permanent place on our annual production roster.
